ED Episodes of Care

ED-Based Episodes of Care

With support from MEDIC, the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC) - another BCBSM-funded Collaborative Quality Improvement (CQI) program - produces a suite of emergency department (ED)-based episodes of care reports designed to help Michigan hospitals and health systems improve ED care. A key goal of these reports is to provide insight into healthcare utilization following index ED visits for a set of selected conditions. MVC currently offers data for 15 ED-based index conditions, including abdominal pain, asthma, atrial fibrillation, cellulitis, unspecified chest pain, COPD, CHF, deep venous thrombosis, diabetes mellitus (short- and long-term complications), gastrointestinal bleed, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, pyelonephritis/urinary tract infections, and syncope. The 30-day ED episodes are created using medical claims data from BCBSM PPO Commercial and Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, BCN HMO Commercial and MA, Medicare Fee-for-Service, and Michigan Medicaid. Along with information on healthcare utilization, the episodes feature data on price-standardized and risk-adjusted claim payments for episode components. Additional specifics about what the reports entail can be found here
